Langkawi, Malaysia

Langkawi, officially known as Langkawi, the Jewel of Kedah is an archipelago of 104 islands in the Andaman Sea, some 30 km off the mainland coast of northwestern Malaysia.


Only four of the 99 islands are inhabited - Pulau Langkawi (the main island), Pulau Tuba, Pulau Rebak and Pulau Dayang Bunting. The population is approximately 99000 of which 90% are Malays. The other ethnic groups consist mainly of Chinese, Indians and Thais.

Langkawi Island was given a World Geopark status byUNESCO.Three of its main conservation areas in Langkawi Geopark are Machincang Cambrian Geoforest Park, Kilim Karst Geoforest Park and Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest park.

Located in Lubok Semilang in Langkawi Island, the Kampung Buku Malaysia or Malaysia Book Village is the first and only book village in the whole South East Asia region. The Village is part of the International Book Villages and Book Towns Movement.

Located just about 10 minutes from the Langkawi International Airport, you will be able to see many books on different topics located among the houses within the village here.
